Bilge Hasdemir

Researcher & Independent Curator, and Project Coordinator /Publics Youth Teen Advisory Board , PUBLICS

Biography

Bilge Hasdemir (she/her) is a researcher and curator working and thinking through the ways in which engaged practices and collective instituting processes actualize their critical and social potentialities. She currently coordinates the PUBLICS Youth Advisory Board at PUBLICS in Helsinki.

As part of an Innovative Training Network on socially engaged art and the future of European independent art spaces, she was a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Early Stage Researcher at the University of Iceland, where she is now completing her PhD. Previously, she served as Curator at Aalto University (2019-2021).

Her PhD research focuses on artist-run spaces in Iceland, their capacities and affordances, and how they have resisted, engaged with, or adapted to processes of neoliberalization and the evolution of cultural policy frameworks. She is also interested in how ideas of Nordic exceptionalism and crypto-colonial perspectives manifest within the cultural landscape of Iceland, and in the ways artist-run spaces themselves participate in sustaining or challenging these narratives.

Her curatorial praxis also engages with labour and migration struggles in the cultural sector, as well as critical policy analysis.
