Maria Elena Guerra Aredal

"Maria Elena Guerra Aredal is a curator, exhibition producer and occasionally teaches. She currently holds the position as Curator of Botkyrka konsthall in Stockholm, in addition to working on independent projects.

Among her most recent roles, she held the position of Curatorial Producer for the Chilean Pavilion at the 60th Venice Biennale, where the Swedish-Chilean artist Valeria Montti Colque was presented. As part of 'Cosmonación', she worked in close collaboration with the artist, curator and project manager, playing a key role in supporting the artist’s creative process in the material realization of the work 'Mamita Montaña'. The project was later shown at Bonniers Konsthall in Stockholm and The Chilean National Museum of Fine Arts in Santiago de Chile.

Since 2015, she has run the space MEGA Foundation, an intimate Stockholm-based project space, presenting new contemporary work. The physical space in which it was originally situated had two simultaneous functions: a production facility for a fire-fighting system and an art space, thus giving the space its unique and experimental characteristics. Between 2018 and 2020, MEGA joined forces with yek (curator Asrin Haidari) to open a new contemporary art space, Tegel. The venue was shared between the two and they produced both joint and individual exhibitions and projects. Today—in its third /locus/phase/location/condition/locality—the gallery is operating from the intimate sphere of the private apartment. She primarily relates her curatorial ethos to that of an ‘exhibition maker.’ For her, this places dialogue with the artist at the forefront and allows for greater freedom in both the process and the outcome. To date, MEGA Foundation has presented both international and Swedish artists, among others: Gábor Pinter, Viktor Fordell, Sally von Rosen, Heji Shin, Oto Gillen, Helena Lund Ek, Nicolas Ceccaldi and Anna Uddenberg.

Maria Elena previously worked as Exhibition Producer at Bonniers Konsthall, Stockholm. She has also worked as a producer for GIBCA, the Gothenburg International Biennial for Contemporary Art (2019 and 2021).
