Sepake Angiama

Sepake Angiama's praxis stems from radical pedagogies, black feminist thought, rethinking human/non–human relations rooted in how we might reimagine and inhabit the world otherwise.

She is the artistic director of the Institute of International Visual Arts (iniva), dedicated to developing artistic research, embodied practices, collective study, publishing and community led commissioning that reflects on the social and political impact of globalisation.

She has previously held positions at Tate Modern, Manifesta and documenta. Her current research and thinking stems from an interest in spatial justice, speculative thinking and intentional communities grounded in radical imagination towards creating ecologies of care, empathy and kindness.

Pedagogies of Care – The Future of Art Museum

Pedagogies of Care reflects on the teaching of the inaugural Masters in the Future of the Art Museum, an experimental multi-disciplinary programme developed by Museion and the University of Bolzano in 2025/26. The presentation brings together the knowledge, skills and experiences developed throughout the module Infrastructures of Care, which explored infrastructures of care in relation to the museum. Engaging with the museum’s shifting dichotomies, the module introduced methodologies and approaches for museum programmes aimed at broad public engagement based on ethical principles. As museums face the evolving challenge of balancing civic and social responsibilities, how can we plan for their future? How might we work together towards change that foregrounds their social role?

Pedagogies of Care considers how curatorial pedagogy might move beyond care towards bold acts of generosity and kindness, creating new relationships between curating, exhibition design and museum education. Can we rethink ideas of vocation and specialism to foster a renewed sense of belonging and critical engagement with the 21st-century museum?

Pedagogies of Care offers a framework for developing critical awareness of the models of practice that shapes the work of the museum. It recognises the social, political, ethical and conceptual challenges affecting the cultural field, and asks which practices of care can inform museums’ social responsibilities.
Pedagogies of Care expands key practices, theories and understandings of infrastructures of support, while developing critical tools and methodologies for the museum sector. This presentation aims to identify and cultivate an understanding of how speculation on the museum’s social functions can generate strategies and outcomes for future teaching.
