Sunnyside art space
Biography
SUNNYSIDE is a not-for-profit art space presenting curated exhibitions. Initiated and run by curator and art historian Eero Karjalainen, curator Isa Lumme, writer and curator Erika Ryppieva and artist Leevi Toija, SUNNYSIDE focuses on curatorial togetherness, context-specificity and long-standing discussion to produce thematic exhibitions and artistic dialogue.
Located in Munkkisaari, Helsinki, SUNNYSIDE aims to explore the becoming-public of art through creating prospects for emerging artists and established praxes alike. As a curatorial collective in position, SUNNYSIDE strives to move away from the authorial subject, fostering artistic and theoretical discussion in its operations. Via its exhibitionary and discursive programme, SUNNYSIDE asks questions regarding the infrastructures of curator- and artist-run initiatives.
SUNNYSIDE is a second part of art space PORTLAND in Zürich, Switzerland. PORTLAND was initiated by artists Leevi Toija and Cristian Zabalaga in spring 2024 with curator Clara Chavan joining the team in 2025. SUNNYSIDE and PORTLAND share a partnership based on friendship, collaboration, and exchange in knowledge and its dismantling through artistic, writerly, and curatorial practices.
