Biography
Uni Nissinen is an independent curator based in Helsinki, with a particular interest in site-responsive exhibition-making. One of their core interests is the relationship between professional art and unconventional contexts, as well as the legitimacy of such contexts as sites for exhibiting. Their recent projects include a site-conceptual group exhibition at Rikhardinkatu Library in Helsinki, the first building in the Nordic countries specifically designed as a public library (2026).
Nissinen also curates as part of the duo Earthbound Lovers (Uni Nissinen & Maikki Siuko). Earthbound Lovers curates atmospheric exhibitions and events that emerge in dialogue with the architectural, historical, and affective dimensions of the chosen site. The project brings together practices from the fields of visual art, sound, performance, and music.
More recently, Earthbound Lovers has adapted its site-responsive practice to the gallery context through exhibitions at Lou in Helsinki. Previous projects have taken place in sites such as the neo-Gothic church of the Deaconess Foundation in Helsinki (2025), Vapaan taiteen tila, an art space operating in a functioning underground civil defence shelter in Helsinki (2024), and K17 – Space for Art and Ecology, a greenhouse located on the grounds of the former Nikkilä Psychiatric Hospital in Sipoo (2023).
Nissinen holds a Master’s degree from the Visual Cultures, Curating and Contemporary Art programme at Aalto University.
